Paymenttools is on a mission to transform the payment landscape for retailers in Europe. With more than 4,4 billion visitors per year in our more than 15,000 REWE Group stores and travel agencies in 21 countries we know exactly what consumers and merchants need when exchanging goods for money. We strongly believe in making payments seamless and invisible, linking them with value added services within the framework of a reliable identity service. Our mantra: #wesolvepayn. We blend cutting-edge technology with stringent security to protect sensitive payment data while nurturing innovation in a cloud-native tech environment.
As a Staff Engineer, you will lead critical technical initiatives in our core payments domain, directly shaping how users pay at merchants - whether it’s tapping a phone in-store, checking out online, or using a digital wallet. Your work ensures these transactions are fast, secure, and seamless across millions of payment moments. You are crafting the backbone of a payment platform that prioritizes security, scalability, reliability, and business impact. You’ll operate across teams, systems, and stakeholder boundaries to deliver meaningful outcomes.
Your Tasks

- You ensure stability and security in production, owning availability, scalability, and operations - especially when it matters most.
- You improve developer workflows by optimizing CI/CD, testing, observability, and internal tooling - helping teams ship faster and more confidently.
- You lead through action - offering feedback, sharing knowledge, coaching peers, and setting technical standards without formal authority.
- You understand how payments flow end-to-end and optimize backend systems to reduce failures, speed up onboarding, and improve the user experience.
- You shape not just what we build, but how we build - influencing engineering culture, hiring, and long-term quality across the team.
