Research Assistant
The position is offered until 31st December 2027. The starting date is as soon as possible, subject to approval of funds. The position is fulltime with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state Hesse, Germany (TV-H E 13).
The position has a focus on research software engineering and is part of the project „VABiKo – Visual Analytics for the Image Collection of the German Colonial Society”, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) within the program „Scientific Library Services and Information Systems“ (LIS). In the project, you will develop innovative solutions for analyzing and searching historical images. The project is carried out in cooperation with the University Library of the Goethe University Frankfurt.
Tasks:
- implementation of state-of-the-art computer vision and NLP methods for image and text analysis
- implementation of state-of-the-art methods for content-based search in historical image data
- implementation of interactive visualization forms for spatiotemporal data
- literature research on current research work on the above-mentioned topics
- integration of the developed software components into the web-based image search system
- preparation of / collaboration on scientific publications
This is a project position that is not limited according to
Profile:
- MSc-degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as computer science, mathematics, or a comparable degree in a related discipline
- strong programming skills, excellent knowledge of one or more modern programming languages (particularly Python, JavaScript), modern web technologies and databases
- strong knowledge of machine learning methods (particularly deep learning), ideally in computer vision, alternatively natural language processing or information retrieval
- extensive experience in software development, e. g. of web applications
- experience with deep learning frameworks (Pytorch, TensorFlow)
- excellent command of written and spoken German and English
